Renowned Chicana author Sandra Cisneros takes the podium once again at Our Lady of the Lake University, this time presenting a free public lecture titled “Tell Me a Story Even If It’s a Lie.” Cisneros has been a longtime friend to OLLU and has embraced the university even more strongly after last summer’s devastating fire destroyed the campus’s historic Main Building. Cisneros currently serves as the eniversity’s writer-in-residence, a program that recently expanded its offerings for aspiring writers. Additionally, OLLU has added a concentration in writing to its master’s program in English, and last year the English Department began the visiting writers program, which welcomes author Carmen Tafolla this semester. Cisneros’s great talent lies in her ability to explore conflicts directly related to her upbringing, including cultural oppression, poverty, and self-identity, while her vivid dialogue and compelling descriptions further add to the accessibility of her writing. Cisneros’s award-winning novel, The House on Mango Street, celebrates the 25th anniversary of its publication in the U.S. this year with a national book tour and a special-edition release.
