The only thing more beguilingly dreadful than a mediocre horror franchise might be a musical — especially a movie-turned-musical.
Perhaps that’s what putting SAW The Musical: The Unauthorized Parody on the cultural map, with a national tour two years in the running. Now, the production has made its way to San Antonio, where it will run through Sunday, April 12, at the Josephine Theatre.
So, why’s pulling audiences to SAW The Musical?
It’s a good guess they see it as a truffle-garnished shit sandwich that turns the original film into modern-day parody/triste ala Jean Genet’s Un Chant d’Amour (A Song of Love) with no separating cell walls, plenty of stage blood spatter and yes, romance: “I sawed my leg off to spray the front row GWAR-style and give you a kiss before I bleed out, dummy. Let’s play!”
How could anyone resist?
