At least 27 campers and counselors from Kerr County’s Camp Mystic died in the holiday weekend’s catastrophic flash flooding, officials with the camp revealed Monday.
So far, at least 88 people have perished in the deluge that swept through the Hill Country on Friday.
Early in the search for survivors, authorities raised concerns that roughly 20 girls from the non-denominational Christian camp were unaccounted for. First responders combed through the camp near the town of Hunt, and Coast Guard personnel rescued at least 15 campers from the site via helicopter.
“Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy,” Camp Mystic said in an online statement. “We are praying for them constantly.”
Camp Mystic director Richard “Dick” Eastland is among those confirmed dead in the disaster. Eastland died while trying to save campers as the rising Guadalupe River began overtaking the cabins at the site, the Express-News reports.
Approximately 750 girls were at the camp when floodwaters tore through, according to Kerr County officials.
Camp Mystic has been in operation for nearly a century, and many daughters of influential Texans have spent summers there. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson’s daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters attended the camp, according to the Texas Tribune, and former First Lady Laura Bush served as a counselor there.
In its statement, Camp Mystic thanked members of their community for their support in the disaster’s aftermath.
“We ask for your continued prayers, respect and privacy for each of our families affected,” the camp said. “May the Lord continue to wrap His presence around all of us.”
