The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office this week dropped charges against a San Antonio man accused of making a death threat against Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, citing “insufficient evidence,” KSAT reports.
San Antonio police arrested Marcos Rene Olvera, 25, after he reportedly wrote in a group chat about Project Marvel on social media platform X that “we need to kill the mayor.” He was charged with retaliation, a third-degree felony.
At that time, Jones was at odds with a large swath of the public over he call for a “strategic pause” on Project Marvel, a $4 billion sports-and-entertainment district anchored by a new basketball arena for the Spurs.
Bexar County voters narrowly approved a public financing deal for the arena in November.
In a statement to KSAT, the Bexar County DA’s office said “our dedication to pursuing justice remains constant,” but didn’t answer the station’s questions about what qualified as “insufficient evidence” to pursue the criminal charge.
Olvera is the second man in less than a year to make a death threat against Jones. In February, Ignacio Zuniga III, 44, allegedly tweeted that people should be “hunting” demonic Democrats, starting with “Mayor GOJ.”
Zuniga’s case is still making its way through the court system.
Due to the large volume of threats against Jones, she now has an overnight security detail provided by the San Antonio Police Department and wears a ballistic vest.
