A supplier for San Antonio-based grocer H-E-B has recalled a ready-made soup because it presents a life-threatening risk to people with certain food allergies, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The first H-E-B food recall since February, 16-ounce Meal Simple brand Red Lentil Dal Soup was taken off shelves for containing milk, which wasn’t marked on its ingredient label.
No illnesses have been reported as of Dec. 10, according to the FDA. However, those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions from consuming the soup.
Bakkavor USA, a fresh prepared food company based in North Carolina, began an internal investigation after a customer notified the firm that the dal soup container actually held a poultry and rice soup, according to the FDA.
The company found that the Meal Simple Turkey & Wild Rice Soup included milk as an ingredient, the FDA reported. The Meal Simple Red Lentil Dal Soup doesn’t contain milk, and the label on the container doesn’t declare the dairy ingredient.
The product was available for purchase in Texas H-E-Bs and distributed from Nov. 3 to Dec. 8, the FDA wrote. The recalled soup is in clear plastic cups with “Best by: 1/11/2026” printed on the bottom.
An investigation into the root cause of the issue is ongoing, according to the FDA.
H-E-B, the FDA and Bakkavor USA urge customers who bought the recalled product to return it to the store of purchase for a full refund. They may also contact H-E-B Customer Service at (855) 432-4438 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
