Texas Gov. Greg Abbott took to social media Sunday to boast that Texas placed more public high schools in the nation’s top 150 than any other state.
He based the claim on a new ranking by U.S. News & World Report of the best schools for the 2025-2026 academic year.
“Another step on the path to being #1 in education,” Abbott boasted in his tweet.
Appearing to sweeten the pot, San Antonio is home to three of the campuses ranked in the top 150: BASIS San Antonio-Shavano Campus, the Young Women’s Leadership Academy and Health Careers High School.
BASIS San Antonio-Shavano Campus — a STEM-focused public charter school where admission is based on a lottery system — landed at No. 58. Meanwhile, Young Women’s Leadership Academy, a lottery-admission public high school within San Antonio Independent School District, came in at No. 98.
Both schools have 100% AP participation and graduation rates. Both schools also boast low student-teacher ratios.
Meanwhile, NEISD’s Health Careers High School, a public magnet school with an application process, ranked 137th in the nation, with a 100% graduation rate and a 94% AP participation rate.
With that in mind, Abbott’s definition of “public high school” is dubious at best, since not just anyone who lives in SAISD or San Antonio can attend the schools mentioned above.
In that case, NEISD’s Ronald Reagan High School is the best true public high school in San Antonio, since it pulled a No. 1,029 ranking in U.S. News’ latest roundup.
