U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is heading into his much-watched Republican primary with nearly twice the war chest of his key rival, Attorney General Ken Paxton, new federal filings show.

Even so, State Rep. James Talarico, a Democrat running to face Cornyn in the general, matched the four-term incumbent’s total in just three weeks of fundraising, according to campaign records.

Cornyn reported raking in nearly $3.4 million during the third quarter via his official campaign plus a pair of joint fundraising committees. In contrast, Paxton pulled in $1.3 million from July through September.

The gains give Cornyn a total of $6 million cash on hand to Paxton’s $3.2 million.

U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt of Houston, a MAGA outlier who entered the Republican race a little more than a week ago, reported raising $366,000 for the quarter, giving him a total $1.5 million in cash for the campaign.

Meanwhile, both Democrats vying to take on the winner in the GOP contest reported third-quarter fundraising that blew past those of their rivals across the aisle.

Talarico, who represents the Austin area, reaped $6.2 million in campaign funds for the period, despite only announcing his candidacy in early September. Meanwhile former North Texas Congressman Colin Allred raised $4.1 million.
