The U.S. Consulate in Matamoros is warning of increased violence between Matamoros and Reynosa factions of the Gulf Cartel.
The Consul released its warning Wednesday, citing reports of large convoys of armed members of the cartel driving through Matamoros and even being spotted near the entrance to Veterans International Bridge, which connects Brownsville with Matamoros.
“While daytime convoys of armed TCO (transnational criminal organizations) members are not necessarily unusual for Matamoros, the amount of violence that has resulted from gun battles between these rival factions is cause for increased vigilance,” the warning states.
The Mexican military killed at least 11 gunmen in Reynosa and Matamoros, and authorities found a grenade near city hall in Matamoros, the Brownsville Herald reported.
