Not far off the famed “Devil’s Backbone” road that runs through the Texas Hill Country is a getaway destination that takes amenities seriously. The roofs of the four buildings that make up Getaway Ranch northeast of Canyon Lake may be made of tent material, but its well-appointed cabins are the epitome of glamping, or glamorous camping.
The property went on the market late last month for $2.85 million. That includes more than 28 acres on a road colorfully named Ghost Dancer outside the town of Fischer.
Mallory and Tuck Wheeler started turning the land into a secluded escape in 2020 and rent each building by the night. They also offer the whole ranch for group getaways. Each building has a panoramic view of the wooded Hill Country.
The largest “tent” is the Texas Hillside Retreat at 1,200 square feet. Its 2,200-square-foot deck wraps around the building and is reached by traversing a 128-foot-long hanging bridge. The other three units, each a Bushtec Safari Tent from South Africa, include the jungle-inspired Jungalow, the chandelier-bedecked The Palace and romance-themed Love Shack.
A common area features a pool and cedar-wrapped hot tub.
