This historic San Antonio home was famous for being lifted on jacks to build its lower story

A historic San Antonio home that made local headlines during its 1911 renovation has gone on the market for just over $1.7 million.

The home was originally built in the Monte Vista area around the turn of the last century by Robert Reid Russell, but underwent a major addition in 1911 that warranted an article in the San Antonio Express. The story chronicled crews lifting the house 14 feet off the ground so a second story could be built underneath.

The Express' writer breathlessly described a construction crew's use of jacks to raise "a house with all its furniture, every picture hanging on the walls, the china and glassware, in the cabinets, nothing, in fact, touched," according to the book San Antonio's Monte Vista: Architecture and Society in a Gilded Age.

The 6,200-square-foot property includes seven bedrooms and five and a half baths, not to mention impressive twin porches on its upper and lower level. The interior features plenty of intricate architectural detail including floor-to-ceiling windows in some rooms.

This home is listed by Uri Villarreal with Uriah Real Estate Organization.
