La Vernia High School Teacher Sentenced to 12 Years for Child Pornography Charges

A former La Vernia High School math teacher has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for distributing child pornography.

Theodore DeAubrey was initially arrested in May 2016 and plead guilty in November for distributing around 1,500 files (mostly videos) which "depicted prepubescent children, including toddlers, engaged in sexually explicit conduct," according to U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson Daryl Fields.

In addition to his 151-month prison sentence, DeAubrey is required to pay $30,000 to each of the six children depicted in the pornographic images he shared online.

In court documents, family and friends of DeAubrey said he was "a person of good moral character" and "always comforting."

DeAubrey's conviction comes in the midst of a federal investigation into widespread sexual abuse at the high school where he was employed. In early 2017, 13 La Vernia High School male varsity athletes were charged with sexually assaulting at least 20 younger high school boys in "sadistic hazing rituals" over the course of three years. In court testimony, victims have described suspects anally raping them with Gatorade bottles, cardboard tubes and lead pipes.

School administrators have tried to play down the charges, telling the media the school is trying "to move on."  A lawsuit filed against the school in April claimed the school had a community that "sanctioned" this kind of child abuse.

Perhaps this kind of school environment is what made a LVHS student think it was okay to allegedly film child pornography on campus — leading to his May arrest — or what made former employee DeAubrey comfortable distributing child porn from his personal computer.
