10-Year-Old Girl Shot While Watching TV Thanksgiving Morning

A 10-year-old girl was watching TV in her bedroom Thursday morning when a bullet flew through the window and hit her chest. She was pronounced dead a half hour later.

The North Side house was hit with several rounds around 7 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, but the young girl was the only one wounded inside. According to the San Antonio Police Department, the girl's teenage brother said he believed the shots were intended to hit him. Police believe the shooting was gang-related.

It's not the first time a child has been accidentally targeted by gang shootings in San Antonio this year. In July, a 4-year-old boy was killed by gunfire in a drive-by shooting on the East Side, and in October, two young boys were shot outside a East Side apartment complex. Just two weeks ago, a 3-year-old boy was shot and killed while sitting in the backseat of a car by a man driving another car. SAPD has called the incident "road rage."

The shooting comes two days after a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed outside a San Antonio Whataburger — a day before his 16-year-old friend was also shot and killed.

SAPD Chief William McManus told WOAI at the scene that the shooting was "beyond tragic."

"Any day is bad, but being Thanksgiving makes it worse," he said. "There will be a special place for this person when he goes to the next life. This is just unforgivable. I just don't understand how anyone can be so selfishly insensitive about who might be a victim, who might be on the other end of that bullet."
