  • Joaquin Castro, speaking here at the Democratic National Convention, has asked the Texas Attorney General to investigate Cambridge Analytica's data mining.

U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's unwillingness to investigate data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica is because online election meddling hasn't hurt the A.G.'s party here.

"[Republicans] are still winning elections," said Castro, who serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. "And as long as they're still winning elections, they're not going to do anything about it."

Castro and five other congressional Dems from Texas last month asked Paxton to open a probe of Cambridge Analytica, which aided the presidential campaigns of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. Their letter requested the A.G. examine whether the company — accused of misusing personal data from 50 million Facebook users — broke campaign and data privacy laws.

Paxton's office wouldn't confirm whether it has an open investigation into Cambridge
. However, at the time Castro sent the letter, a Paxton aide dismissed it as a "political stunt."

"My top priority has been the integrity of our democracy," Castro told the Current.
