The San Antonio Police Department sent officers to the South Side home of Jonathan Joss, the King of the Hill actor slain Sunday in a shooting, a total of 74 times since January, the Express-News reports.

Before Joss’ death, which allegedly followed a confrontation with a neighbor, police responded to 11 disturbances, nine calls for shootings, six for fires, six mental health-related calls and five welfare checks at the actor’s residence on the 200 block of Dorsey Street, according to the daily.

A San Antonio-native, Joss is best known as voicing the King of the Hill character John Redcorn. He also played Chief Ken Hotate in sitcom Parks and Recreation and appeared in other film and TV roles.

The Express-News’ tally of police dispatches to the address comes after neighbors told KSAT and News 4 SA that Joss was in frequent conflict with neighbors.

“He would argue with different people,” one neighbor who wished to remain anonymous told KSAT. “It could be over dogs. It could be over trash.”

However, another neighbor told News 4 SA that Joss and his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, were “harassed because they were gay.”

In a Monday Facebook post, Gonzales suggested his husband’s shooting death was a hate crime, adding that the suspect now in police custody — neighbor Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, 56 — yelled “violent homophobic slurs” before opening fire on Joss.

The shooting occurred while the couple was at the property to check its mailbox, according to Gonzales’ social media post. Joss home, which his father built in 1957, sustained severe damage in January due to a fire.

Despite the allegation by Gonzales and the neighbor who spoke to News 4 SA, SAPD officials said that the attack on Joss doesn’t appear to be a hate crime.

“We take such allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information,” the department told the Current in an emailed statement. “Should any new evidence come to light, we will charge the suspect accordingly.”

Ceja is charged with murder and being held on $200,000 bond.
