The San Antonio Police Department cautioned residents to look out a for scam in which crooks pretending to be police demand money to prevent the execution of an arrest warrant.

In Friday Facebook post, SAPD officials said the department “will NEVER contact citizens and ask for a payment, via phone or to transfer money to a certain account.”

The message continued: “Be mindful of who you may be speaking to, and verify the person on the other line before giving out any identifying information over the phone.”

SAPD officials also said those with an arrest warrant or outstanding case with the department should follow up with their designated unit before giving out personal information to unknown individuals over the phone.

Similar scams have run rampant in other areas of the country in recent months, according to news reports.

Last week, the Colleyville Police Department in North Texas was able to recover nearly $2,000 in Bitcoin after a resident fell for an arrest-warrant scam, reports the Star-Telegram.
