After being shuttered during the COVID-19 pandemic, San Antonio’s popular Lion & Rose British Pub is on target to open in a new location later this month, owner Allen Tharp said.

Tharp’s comments came during a Monday appearance on The More You Know, The Better It Tastes podcast. The show, hosted by San Antonio Restaurant Facebook Group co-creators Alan Williams and Susie Laredo, explores food-related news in the Alamo City.

The new Lion & Rose will be located at 2330 I-10 West, outside the exclusive Dominion neighborhood. The drinking and dining spot is wedged between Texas Road House and Tardif American Brasserie.

“We’re excited,” Tharp said on the podcast. “We think this one we’re building is going to be the best we’ve ever had.”

Fans of the prior Lion & Rose, located at The Rim shopping center, can expect a similar British pub-inspired menu along with a scratch kitchen and a full-service bar serving craft cocktails and tap beer and ale, according to Tharp.

In addition to plenty of parking, the new location will feature a large covered patio with heaters for winter months and misters for the summer.

Although Tharp didn’t provide an opening date for the new Lion & Rose, he said builders are wrapping up work on the structure. It will take about two weeks before the pub is ready to serve the public, he added.

At its height, Lion & Rose ran three San Antonio locations, with its first opening in Alamo Heights in 2004. The last remaining location at The Rim closed in 2020.

On the podcast, Tharp said The Rim outpost shut down because the landlord wanted to raise the rent. While that may be true, the city ordered Lion & Rose to cease operations in May 2020 over allegations that it violated COVID-19 protocols.

Months later, two former restaurant employees sued Tharp, claiming they weren’t fairly paid for sick leave and were terminated for taking time off to be tested for the virus.

At the time Lion & Rose officials said the business “prides itself” on complying with the law, adding that expected to be absolved of wrongdoing.
