Uvalde City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a $2 million settlement between the city and the families of the victims of the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting, according to media reports.

The Uvalde families have filed multiple lawsuits seeking compensation over authorities’ handling of the worst school shooting in Texas history. Despite the presence of 400 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, police took 77 minutes to confront the 18-year-old gunman whose rampage slaughtered 19 students and two teachers.

The city will pay out the settlement through its insurance policy, according to ABC News.

The attorney representing the families, Josh Kaskoff, confirmed to ABC that families of all 21 victims were represented in the settlement. The city and the families reached the settlement through a year-long restorative justice process.

Beyond the financial compensation, San Antonio TV station KSAT reports the agreement will:

– Implement a new “fitness of duty” standard for Uvalde police officers
– Enhance Uvalde Police Department training
– Establishe May 24 as an annual “Day of Remembrance”
– Create a new memorial at Uvalde’s Central Plaza
– Provide mental health services for Robb Elementary School families and survivors

“Nothing can ever make up the losses and harms these families endured on May 24 … but today’s agreement marks an important step forward in advancing community healing,” Uvalde Mayor Hector Luevano said, according to KSAT.
