South BBQ & Kitchen will close its original South Side location Sunday, Jan. 12, as it prepares top make a jump to the north-of-downtown Monte Vista neighborhood this summer.
Andrew Samia, who founded South BBQ six years ago, confirmed the closure and the business’ eventual jump to 2100 N. Main Ave. in comments to the Current. He didn’t provide a specific opening date for the new restaurant.
The noted local pitmaster has also lent his expertise to other popular barbecue spots including the recently shuttered Dignowity Meats and the James Beard Award-nominated Curry Boys BBQ.
South BBQ’s new location on the corner of North Main and Ashby Place will be situated within walking distance of the original Curry Boys on the St. Mary’s Strip.
South BBQ’s original eatery at 2011 Mission Road will continue offering its post oak-smoked brisket, pulled pork and St. Louis-style pork ribs until its final day of service, according to Samia.
The South Side fixture has drawn raves for its smoked meats, which are available by the half pound and also feature in sandwich and taco options. Its menu also includes sides such as borracho beans, creamed elote, tomato-and-green bean salad and a loaded tater-tot casserole.
