U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro over the weekend ripped into the Trump administration and the FBI for the arrest of a Milwaukee Circuit Court judge accused of allegedly helping an undocumented immigrant “evade arrest.”
“This arrest is another troubling attack on the judiciary and the rule of law,” said Castro, a Democrat who represents San Antonio’s West Side. “The Trump Administration continues its authoritarian campaign against its perceived enemies: universities, law firms, immigrants, political opponents, and judges, among others.”
FBI Director Kash Patel alleges Judge Hannah Dugan instructed an undocumented migrant in her courtroom to evade ICE agents waiting in a nearby hallway. Both the Patel’s agency and the Trump DOJ have accused Dugan of obstructing justice.
Despite the alarms raised about Trump arresting purported enemies within the judicial system, the White House doubled down this week, saying the administration isn’t opposed to arresting U.S. Supreme Court justices.
“Anyone who is breaking the law or obstructing federal law enforcement officials from doing their jobs is putting themselves at risk of being prosecuted, absolutely,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a Monday morning press briefing.
