A quiet — but tasty — trend is on the rise in San Antonio this summer: stealthy openings of new restaurants.

The latest example? Honey’s Chicken Joint, a fresh concept with ties to north-of-downtown favorite Smoke Shack BBQ, is now serving up crisp fried chicken and fixings at in a former Church’s Chicken location at Rittiman and Wurzbach roads.

Smoke Shack owner Chris Conger, who runs that eatery with his wife Kate, is a member of Honey’s founding team. The Congers last year celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Smoke Shack’s award-winning brick-and-mortar location on Broadway, and the pair also run the adjacent Pigpen Neighborhood Bar.

As its name indicates, Honey’s, 1001 Rittiman Road, is departure from Smoke Shack’s focus on smoked meat. The new eatery is centered around fried chicken, available in multiple options, including served up with honey butter biscuits or in hearty sandwiches such as the massive Big Country, which also includes tater tots and gravy between two buns. Chicken salads are also on the menu.

The Honey’s concept has apparently been in the works for a few years. The ownership team has teased its work on the project going back to 2021 by posting Instagram photos of trips to other famous fried chicken joints around the country for apparent inspiration.
