The owners of a forthcoming San Antonio speakeasy are adding a final polish to what they hope will be a North Side hidden gem.
Il Segreto — an underground cocktail spot promising a fusion of old-world charm and contemporary Italian sophistication — will debut in late July, according to its ownership team. The venture hasn’t yet set a grand opening date, however.
Co-developed by Quintana Rum founder Ciro Di Costanzo and chef Gennaro Locricchio of Po Po Trattoria Pizzeria, Il Segreto aims to transport guests with a blend of classic European design along with both Italian tradition and modern flair — all tucked behind an unassuming facade.
Costanzo and Locricchio want to keep Il Segreto’s location under wraps, but the Current can confirm the bar’s location is in Shavano Park along Huebner Road. General vicinity aside, it will be a true speakeasy since entry will be by invite and referral only.
Quintana Rum will feature in the specialty drinks, expected to range from a chocolate martini to a Tuscan Flower signature cocktail. Guests also will be able to order classic tipples from the full bar.
As for the food?
“Gennaro hails from Naples. If you’re going to try authentic Italian cuisine, his cooking is the way to go,” Di Costanzo said.
Il Segreto’s kitchen will primarily focus on lighter bites to compliment the cocktails. Costanzo teased carpaccio di peccato — or “carpaccio of the sinners” — as a menu highlight. The small plate centers around fresh-sliced pear layered with Parma prosciutto, tomatoes, whipped burrata and fresh basil with a touch of honey and lemon zest.
Other food options will range from redfish ceviche to orzo cinque terre, a dish inspired by Italy’s Cinque Terre region.
Il Segreto’s owners plan to introduce a membership program with gold, silver and black tiers, each with their own perks. Those interested in signing up for a membership can contact the business via its social media channels. As of publication, the team also is working to set up a phone number for those seeking memberships.
“We’re aiming for luxury and sophistication with Il Segreto,” Di Costanzo added.
