Pumpers: An Adult Burger Store, which originated as a St. Mary’s Strip popup, has gained a solid following for its brick-and-mortar location even though it’s still running in soft-opening capacity.
The restaurant, located at 1101 Broadway near the San Antonio Museum of Art, now plans a massive grand-opening celebration for Sunday, Jan. 19, according to its owners. The shindig will get underway at 2 p.m. and last until the last burger flip at the stroke of midnight.
Teasing $5 drink specials such as its killer frozen Bushwhacker and a DJ, a glizzy bar and a build-your-own-pumper option. For the burger-curious, a pumper refers to a juicy double-patty burger, while a glizzy is a common reference to fully loaded Akaushi beef hot dog fried in beef fat.
In keeping with the concept’s cheeky, R-rated schtick, the Pumpers team — led by chefs Stefan Bowers, late of fine-dining bastion Rebelle, and Zeke Cavazos — also hinted at a cheeky “complimentary medical attention station” onsite along with “total chaos.”
“It’s no small feat bringing a business to life,” Bowers told the Current. “We aren’t [just] celebrating a burger, we’re celebrating the inception of a business that we hope will be a meaningful addition to the downtown community.”
Another tantalizing aspect of the Pumpers menu? Instead of oil, the expertly executed french fries are cooked in beef tallow, enhancing the flavor of each crispy bite.
