The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for South and Central Texas, including San Antonio, Monday evening through Tuesday as frigid temperatures and snow grip the area over the next few days.

In response to the winter weather, several San Antonio area school districts and universities have canceled classes. Meanwhile, the City of San Antonio plans to open several overnight homeless shelters for unhoused residents as temperatures drop below freezing.

Here’s everything folks in the 2-1-0 need to know about this week’s winter storm.

Winter Weather Forecast

Folks in San Antonio should expect rain beginning at around 6 p.m. Monday. As temperatures drop below freezing, that rain will transition into snow, with flurries and freezing rain expected through Wednesday morning, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service.

Folks within Loop 1604 can expect to see about half an inch of snow and an additional tenth-of-an-inch of ice when they wake-up on Tuesday, creating dangerous driving conditions – especially on overpasses and bridges.

Even so, temperatures are expected to rise to nearly 40 degrees on Tuesday afternoon before plunging below freezing again on Tuesday evening. That rapid drop in temperature could cause roads to refreeze overnight, creating dangerous travel conditions on Wednesday morning.

Temperatures are expected to get above freezing again around noon-time on Wednesday, however.

School closures

In response to the winter weather, several San Antonio area school districts have canceled classes on Tuesday, including San Antonio Independent School District, Northeast ISD, Northside ISD, Southside ISD, South San ISD, East Central ISD and Alamo Heights ISD.

Several local universities, including the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M San Antonio, and Alamo Colleges District, have canceled classes on Tuesday.

Folks should visit their local school district’s website for more information on school closures.

Resources for unhoused folks

The City of San Antonio said in a statement that it plans to open six overnight “Resilience Hubs” for unhoused folks during the winter weather.

The shelters will open at 6 p.m. on Monday and provide a place for people in need to stay the night and keep warm. They will also offer free WiFi, power access, and kennels for pets.

The hubs are located at:

  • Southside Lions Senior Center, 3303 Pecan Valley
  • Normoyle Senior Center, 700 Culberson
  • Northeast Senior Center, 4135 Thousand Oaks
  • Gilbert Garza Community Center, 1450 Mira Vista
  • Miller’s Pond Community Center, 6175 Old Pearsall
  • Copernicus Community Center, 5003 Lord Rd

VIA, in partnership with the city, will also offer travel to the Resilience Hubs free of charge.

Folks should visit the City of San Antonio’s website for information on resources available to those in need during the winter weather.

As always, folks are also encouraged to check in on elderly neighbors, to bring their pets inside, to cover their pipes and bring plants indoors during the storm.
