San Antonio ISD officials sent an email Thursday responding to parents’ fears about President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community.

The email obtained by the Current went out to SAISD students’ parents, expressing support and solidarity. It was signed by SAISD Board President Christina Martinez and Superintendent of Schools Jaime R. Aquino.

“We recognize that recent events and discussions surrounding immigration enforcement and the rights of LGBTQ+ students may bring uncertainty, fear or anxiety to some families,” the message reads. “Please know that you’re not alone. We stand with you, and we are here to provide support, reassurance and resources during these challenging times.”

The school district shared a page of resources that includes support for housing, jobs, utilities, clothing, food, transportation and legal and immigration services.

The flurry of executive orders during Trump’s first week in office included one titled “Protecting the American People Against Invasion,” which lifts Biden protections preventing raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at sensitive locations such as schools, churches and hospitals.

SAISD’s email didn’t say what it would do in event of an ICE raid on school premises. However, the message reiterated the district’s commitment to equity and inclusion.

“Our schools are spaces where diversity is celebrated, and every child is valued for who they are,” the message continued. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to equity, inclusion and respect for all. Regardless of background, identity, or circumstance, every student has a right to an education free from fear or discrimination.”
