Victor Wembanyama this week told French sports magazine L’Equipe he wants to follow in the footsteps of other Spurs greats including Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili by staying in San Antonio for the entirety of his career — a rarity in the modern NBA.
“I know that not every player in the NBA has the same ambitions,” the 7-foot-3 superstar told the magazine Tuesday. “But, it’s obviously my dream to spend my entire career with a single franchise. Here. In San Antonio.”
Wemby’s comments might come as a surprise to some hoops enthusiasts, considering the Silver and Black haven’t made the playoffs, or even the play-in tournament, during his three years in the league.
Still, the remarks are sure to put a smile on the faces of die-hard Spurs fans, many of whom have fretted in online comments that the 7-foot-3 freak of nature might run off to Los Angeles or New York at the first chance.
If Wembanyama does remain in San Antonio the duration of his career, he’d join an elite group of Hall of Famers who only played for one team. In addition to Duncan, that cadre includes Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki.
Even so, talent alone isn’t enough to keep someone on a single team forever. Just ask Luka Doncic, whom the Dallas Mavericks unceremoniously shipped off to the Lakers last season.
