
Billed as the “largest gathering of the greatest mariachi artists in the world,” the 31st Annual Mariachi Extravaganza will bring practitioners of the three-century-old Mexican folk music form into downtown San Antonio for three days this week.
The sprawling event, which runs Thursday through Saturday, will include competitions, workshops, concerts and awards presentations featuring some 1,300 mariachi musicians and vocalists from throughout the U.S.
Things will get underway with 47 vocal semifinalists, ages 8 to 24, battling for honors in a variety of categories, including recognition for the best performers at the elementary, middle, high school and college levels.
Top singers move onto Saturday’s finals. The winners then perform with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlánin a Saturday evening concert.
