Oops.
Regulators this week called out one of the PACs raising funds for U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s reelection campaign for a glaring omission in its latest federal financial filing. Namely, the paperwork doesn’t include the signature of the group’s treasurer — an oversight campaign finance experts say amounts to an amateur-hour mistake.
In a letter dated Tuesday, the Federal Election Commission alerted Texans for Senator John Cornyn Inc. that it had violated federal campaign finance rules by submitting a third-quarter financial report that wasn’t signed by its treasurer or another “designated agent.”
The independent federal agency gave the PAC until Feb. 10 to resubmit its paperwork — this time with a treasurer’s John Hancock affixed. Failure to do so by the deadline could result in an audit or enforcement action, the letter warned before adding that the FEC won’t consider a request for a time extension.
Of course, it’s unlikely the FEC will pursue any kind of enforcement action against Texans for Senator John Cornyn since the six-member commission has been operating without a quorum for months. President Donald Trump has shown little interest in refilling positions on the commission because the absences leave the agency toothless, according to campaign finance experts.
Still, it’s nice to know someone in Washington is paying attention. Even if some folks filing paperwork for PACs don’t appear to be.
