Jots, the restaurant at San Antonio’s recently renovated Gunter Hotel, is going to the dogs. In the literal sense.
The eatery in the historic downtown hotel, 205 E. Houston St., is now offering a chef-curated menu exclusively for the most discerning Dachshunds, effete English terriers and pretentious Pomeranians.
Jots’ specialty dog menu is “designed with the same culinary care as its human offerings,” a spokesperson for the hotel steps away from the River Walk said.
The new menu — dubbed Benson & Friend’s Favorites, and clearly aimed at the growing number of travelers who leave home with canine companions — features dishes centered around short ribs, chuck and brisket along with other dog-friendly whole foods such as salmon, chicken breast, eggs and rice.
“Designed with canine wellness in mind,” the menu also offers a fresh vegetable-forward Canine Crudité with apples, carrots and green beans.
Disappointingly, there is no pasta dish a la “Lady and the Tramp,” but Jots does offer a whipped cream and berries dessert reminiscent of the internet-ubiquitous Starbucks “pup cup.”
The new menu “allows canine guests to dine alongside their owners with thoughtfully prepared dishes made from wholesome, recognizable ingredients,” Gunter officials also noted.
“Pet-friendly travel has evolved, and today’s guests are looking for experiences that truly welcome their dogs, not just accommodate them,” Gunter Hotel Owner and Managing Director at Axle Capital Jiwon Choi said in a statement. “With this new menu from Jots, we’re extending our culinary philosophy to our four-legged guests, offering a dining experience that feels just as intentional and special.”
While San Antonio has experienced a recent slump in tourism overall, this is one way to address it, though it might rankle some humans to learn there are dogs dining better than they are.
It might be time to camp out under the table and beg Fido for scraps.
