Artpace’s Spring 2026 International Artists-in-Residence program is presenting three distinct installations by Violette Bule (Houston), Mel Chin (Burnsville, North Carolina) and Việt Lê (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) selected by Guest Curator Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander.
The installations, which will be on display through Sunday, July 17, is a strong grouping that invites contemplation.
Hydra by Violette Bule uses architectural elements to force viewers through a space shaped by the constriction and control that mimics U.S. immigration policy.
Mel Chin’s Hauntology of Their Labor is a memento mori that references philosopher Jacques Derrida’s concept that the past inhabits the present through absence, just as the faceless workers who once inhabited his space are now represented by empty office chairs.
Việt Lê’s trăng trắng | milk moon is a mashup of metaphysical pursuits and pop culture. Comical but teetering on the precipice of cynical, the artist’s profundity speaks to the banal with the same reverence as the holy.
Free, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, noon-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday through July 17, 445 N. Main St., (210)212-4900, artpace.org.
