San Antonians can take home a new furry family member this weekend — completely free.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) is putting on a zero-cost pet adoption special at its facility at 4710 State Highway 151.
For each adopted pet, SAACS will cover the adoption fee, sterilization, microchip, initial vaccinations and access to shelter trainers for the pet’s life, according to officials with the city department. The only things potential adopters must bring are an ID and an open mind.
More than 800 adoptable animals are listed on the SAACS website, and most are eligible for this weekend’s free program, SAACS spokeswoman Lisa Norwood said.
As always, SAACS works with each potential owner to match them with the ideal pet, Norwood added. Visitors will go through an application process, spend time with the animals and answer questions about their lifestyle and activity level.
Beyond finding the ideal pet, Norwood this weekend’s special adoption promotion is offers a way to combat the concern about roaming animals in San Antonio.
“This is a way that the community can help address those problems,” she said. “They can choose adoption. They can come to the shelter.”
Even if residents miss out this weekend, it’s not their only chance to adopt. SAACS adopts out pets seven days a week, charging its usual fee of $86 for dog adoptions and $34 for cats.
