A longtime Alamo Heights landmark soon will be no more.

The recently shuttered Barn Door Restaurant and Meat Market, which has stood at the corner of North New Braunfels and Crownhill avenues since 1953, will be razed next month to make way for the relocation of Mexican eatery Soluna, according to the San Antonio Report.

“We’re going to tear the Barn Door down and build from the ground up,” Gerardo Calvillo, general manager of Soluna and El Mirasol owner Mamita’s Cuisine Inc. told the online news outlet. “We’re hoping to start demolition within the next month. But those details are still kind of up in the air right now.”

Known for its iconic red farmhouse building and red checkered tablecloths, the Barn Door sits on property formerly owned by San Antonio’s well-connected Strauss family. The 1.6-acre lot at 8400 N. New Braunfels Ave. is valued at $1.9 million, Bexar County records show.

Calvillo told the San Antonio Report that constructing a new building will allow Soluna to offer a second story with a rooftop bar and kitchen along with a first-floor dining room and two separate patios. The restaurant is locating from 7959 Broadway #204, just a few blocks away.

The new Soluna will make its debut around Fiesta 2028, Calvillo also told the San Antonio Report.

The Barn Door shut down on Mother’s Day of this year after serving up steaks and comfort food for more than seven decades. Opened by Bill Tassos in 1953, the restaurant with red-checkered tablecloths and a timeless vibe became known as a place not just for date nights and family get togethers but also for closing business deals.
