San Antonio dining staple the Barn Door Restaurant & Meat Market is closing its doors after 73 years feeding comforting fare to hungry customers, according to its owners.

“It has truly been the privilege of a lifetime to serve this community,” Randy Stokes, co-owner of the Alamo Heights steakhouse, said in an official statement. ““For more than 70 years, The Barn Door has been a place where people came together to celebrate life’s milestones, share meals and create memories. It has truly been the privilege of a lifetime to serve this community.”

The decision didn’t come easy, added Stokes, who’s co-owned the business with his wife Darcie since 2011. He didn’t go into detail about why the couple decided to close rather than seek a buyer.

Bill Tassos opened the Barn Door, 8400 N. New Braunfels Ave., in 1953, and the restaurant quickly built a reputation for its family friendly atmosphere, hearty grilled steaks, fresh seafood, comforting dishes and classic red-checkered tablecloths.

The Barn Door’s timeless feel was a draw for generations of customers. Dinner the almost felt like a step back in time, and its hospitality remained consistent. By all appearances, the spot continued to thrive despite changing dining trends, roller-coaster economic conditions and several ownership changes.

The Barn Door’s final day of service will be Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, when it will serve 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Reservations will be required starting Friday, May 1, and the restaurant will operate under new hours: 5-1 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday. Reservations are available online
