San Antonio restaurant Ping’s Sichuan Kitchen, known for its bold Sichuan dishes, is expanding to a second location.

Late last month, Ping’s took over the former space of Tiger Chinese Cuisine, 12730 Interstate 10, Suite 312, in University Square. It’s been operating in a soft-opening capacity since then, and a grand-opening celebration is slated for mid-July.

The restaurant debuted its Stone Oak location, 2339 E. Evans Road, Suite 103, just a year ago. Founder Joanne “Ping” Xia calls her culinary approach “Texas Meets China,” meaning she focuses on traditional Sichuan dishes prepared with the same care she learned cooking alongside her grandmother in Chongqing.

“I like to see people enjoying the food,” Xia said in a statement to the Current. “I want this restaurant to share authentic Sichuan cuisine with everyone and be a place of community for family and friends.”

The University Square location will mirror the original’s bright atmosphere, right down to the custom-branded chopsticks. The menu will also be the same, including signature dishes such as Double Pepper Chicken, Ping’s Boiled Spicy Beef, Steamed Slivered Fish with Pepper Mix and more.

Regional classics from the Chinese province round out the menu. Those include Mapo Tofu, Twice-Cooked Pork and Sichuan Dan Dan Noodles. For diners who prefer less heat, the kitchen will continue to offer non-spicy staples including Walnut Shrimp and Beijing Shredded Pork with Chinese buns.

Xia said the expansion is both a response to demand and a chance to connect with a new part of San Antonio.

“Guests can expect the exact same beloved menu and fiery, traditional dishes that made our first location a success,” she said.

Ping’s new location near USTA features a light and airy design, much like its original restaurant.
