San Antonio-based Santikos Entertainment is expanding again, this time snapping up 22 acres on the city’s fast-growing far West Side, the San Antonio Business Journal reports.
Officials with the cinema chain told the Business Journal they plan to develop a major mixed-use development at State Highway 211 and Potranco Road anchored by multiple movie screens, a bar and a game room. They didn’t reveal a purchase price.
The first phase of the project will be the construction of retail pad sites, some fronting Highway 211 and others along Stevens Parkway in the eastern side of the property, according to the report. The pads should be ready to build on within 18 to 24 months.
“If you forecast out the expected growth in the 211/Potranco area in terms of the number of new rooftops that are planned, the economics on this thing are going to be fantastic,” Santikos CEO Blake Hastings told the Business Journal of the company’s interest in the area.
The purchase comes after Santikos Entertainment last summer unveiled plans for a $30 million movie, retail and entertainment center northwest of the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort along U.S. Highway 281 North.
Founded in 2011, Santikos operates some 30 theater locations across Texas and seven other states. Eight its cinemas are in San Antonio. The company tripled its size in 2023 when it bought 17 cinemas from VSS-Southern Theaters LLC, a New York-based private equity firm.
