Architect Arthur J. Herrmann is best known for building downtown’s stylish Hotel Havana, but this 1907 Monte Vista home he designed for businessman C.W. Buhler is similarly elaborate and refined.
The two-story residence’s distinctive Art Nouveau design and beautiful woodwork make it hard to miss. Despite its iconic design and a nearly $50,000 price cut, it’s been languishing on the market for 190 days with an asking price of $850,000.
Truth be told, it’s been on and off the market for years. Nonetheless, it is quite possibly one of the most breathtaking homes in the city.
The five-bedroom, four-bath residence includes handcrafted millwork, parquet flooring, and a striking grand staircase. Whimsical Art Nouveau carvings adorn archways between the sunroom and the formal dining room. In fact, Herrmann is known for his great love of Art Nouveau, and examples of his work in this style can be found around the world.
The dining room further impresses with a coffered ceiling and built-in buffet. Built-ins are a hallmark of Herrmann’s craftsmanship throughout the home, including shelving and a bench in the foyer.
More than 115 years old, the house also features original hand-painted frescoes and classic light fixtures, among other historic details.
Throughout the home, glass pocket doors and interior French doors serve as elegant transitions between rooms, with no detail too small for Hermann’s attention.
This home is listed by Alui Alton with Keller Williams Heritage.
