Grindr, the LGBTQ+ hookup app, is experiencing outages in Dallas after an unprecedented mid-term Republican convention got underway there on Wednesday — and social media users are quick to speculate why.
“These so called anti-gay Crusaders certainly enjoy their sausage fest apps, don’t they?” @FozonCapital’s tweeted in response to a graphic reportedly showing the app’s service collapse in the Big D.
“You would think by now the company would have ramped up in servers to scale for these events,” user @nlinley chimed in.
“Well, they say it’s a big tent,” @cheuph commented.
The Downdetecter online tool , which records and maps user problems with widely trafficked websites, continues to show Dallas as the biggest location for outage complaints about Grindr right now. The Dallas convention, billed as a “Trump-a-Palooza” aimed at shoring up the GOP’s flagging midterm fortunes, will continue through the end of the day Thursday.
Some X users were quick to dismiss the outage reports as Grindr itself playing games or people logging reports just to stir the pot. But this isn’t the first time reports have surfaced of the app experiencing crashes and usage upticks during right-wing gatherings.
Last year, during the memorial service for right-wing provocateur Charlie Kirk in Phoenix, Downdetecter logged a surge in Grinder outage complaints in the city, LGBTQ+ news site Queerly reported.
Similarly, during the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee users complained about continual service crashes, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “If that’s the case, it aligns with Grindr activity during previous national conventions,” the paper stated.
And following the 2016 GOP’s national convention in Cleveland, Vice quoted sources at Grindr saying the area around the Midwestern city’s convention center tallied a 66% traffic increase. At the same time, hookup hotspots including Times Square and South Beach recorded no comparable upticks.
Of course, logic suggests hookup apps — both straight and queer — attract extra traffic in areas hosting large out-of-town conventions. The amusing thing here is that most of those conventions don’t host speakers who continue to use gay and trans people as targets for ridicule and condemnation.
