Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg is coming to San Antonio this Sunday to support a pair of South Texas Democrats running for Congress.
Buttigieg will speak at a rally for former Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy Johnny Garcia, who’s running to represent Texas’ 35th District, and former public school teacher Katy Padilla Stout, who’s challenging Republican Brandon Herrera in the 23rd District.
Buttigieg, who ran a failed presidential campaign in 2020, has reemerged as a force in Democratic politics this election cycle, traveling the country to support progressive candidates and causes with his Win the Era PAC. So far, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has endorsed more than 50 candidates running in the midterms, including Padilla Stout and Garcia.
“Voters in these districts have the chance to send leaders to Congress who will hold this administration accountable for their failures, work to lower healthcare costs, strengthen public schools, and build an economy where one job is enough,” Buttigieg told the Current in a statement. “Johnny and Katy will prove in November that there is no such thing as a permanently red district or state, and I’m proud to be on their team.”
Both Padilla Stout and Garcia are running in districts Democrats believe could flip blue this cycle. During the rally, the trio will discuss Texas’ growing affordability crisis, including rising healthcare costs, and speak in support of public safety.
