San Antonio’s ghosts have plenty of places to haunt. They just don’t seem to be showing up much.
Or so says a new study by home security company Vivint assessing how haunted 74 U.S. cities are.
According to the report, San Antonio has 56 purportedly haunted places, making it second only to Los Angeles, which has 61. Meanwhile, our neighbor to the north, Austin, boasts a paltry 21.
Here’s where it gets complicated, though.
San Antonio had just 27 reported ghost sightings last month, or less than a quarter of Austin’s 115, which was higher than any other city in the study.
That gap helps explain why San Antonio finished 11th on the study’s “Spookiness Index.” Austin came in eighth, ahead of cities such as New Orleans. Texas dominated the ghost sightings category overall, with Austin, Dallas and Houston taking the top three spots in the study.
To get the results, researchers looked at seven factors, including reported ghost sightings, haunted places, haunted house attractions, paranormal-themed businesses and “spooky” Google searches. Using data collected in September, Vivint normalized each measure and combined them into a single score.
On the other measures, San Antonio is less spooky than its haunted-places number suggests.
The Alamo City had the study’s second-lowest concentration of psychics and astrologers at 0.73 per 10,000 residents. Additionally, our city logged just 163 “spooky” Google searches per 10,000 residents, the lowest among the four Texas cities in the study’s top 20.
Texas politics is a mess. We make it a readable mess.
