Veteran NBA guard Chris Paul is heading back to the Los Angeles Clippers after deciding not to resign with the San Antonio Spurs, ESPN reported Monday.
Paul agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Clippers, according to the cable network. The move comes as the guard enters his 21st season in the league without a championship ring.
Paul’s decision to move on may come as little surprise to some Spurs fans. If he’d stuck around, his playing time could have been limited by competition from All-Star De’Aaron Fox, 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and No. 2 draft pick Dylan Harper.
Paul averaged 9 points, four rebounds and seven assists in 28 minutes of play during his single season with the Silver and Black.
The 12-time NBA All-Star wanted to retain a starting role wherever he ended up during free agency, HoopsHype reported earlier this month. However, with the Clippers having an ensemble of All-Star-caliber guards, including James Harden and Bradley Beal, it’s more likely Paul will fill more of a sixth-man role on the team.
Paul’s family also lives in Los Angeles, which may have played a role in his return to the Clippers, a franchise the 40-year-old played with for six seasons between 2011 and 2017.
