In an era when urban development and habitat destruction are proceeding at a breakneck pace, it is more important than ever to turn one’s attention to the little critters that undergird every part of our green space: pollinators.
To that end, the Alamo Area Master Naturalists established the Butterfly Learning Center on the grounds of the Voelcker Homestead in Phil Hardberger Park to help San Antonians learn hands-on about native pollinators and the habitats they keep.
Raising Caterpillars 101, which takes place this Saturday in an outdoor garden where all plants are either food sources or larval hosts for butterflies, is no exception to this mission.
Expect training by experts such as Master Naturalist Derrick Mims on how best to support our native pollinators from cradle to air — from their larval stages to their lives as caterpillars, as chrysalises and, finally, flying free as butterflies.
All participants will receive growing containers along with host plants caterpillars can munch on. Additionally, they’ll get seeds pollinators and humans alike will be able to nurture into flowers. Furthermore, Caterpillar Kit supplies are available for the first 10 households who arrive at the garden. The early birds get the worm, so to speak.
Registration encouraged, but not required.
