If you grew up in the 1980s, you’ll likely know how funny and talented actor Michael Winslow was on the big screen in movies including Police Academy, Spaceballs and Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie. Winslow was also credited for making some of the menacing mogwai voices heard in Gremlins (“Gizmo, caca!”).
From Nov. 9-10, the “Man of 10,000 Sound Effects” and self-described “voicetramentalist” will be in San Antonio for Retro City’s Toy and Collectible Show at Ingram Park Mall near Dillard’s.
While Winslow has consistently worked in film and TV since being a household name 40 years ago, his star power didn’t get a major boost again until 2021 when he was featured as a contestant during the 16th season of America’s Got Talent.
“Being on America’s Got Talent brought back a lot of memories,” Winslow, 66, told the Current during a phone interview Friday. “I realized how stressful it was, but fun. It was intense. It was good to see everybody again. I got to meet a whole different generation of folks. It helped point me in a new direction.”
His new path in the entertainment industry has led him into lots of different directions, including the video game world when he joined popular YouTube gamer Jason Gastrow on his platform to talk sound design. One of their videos has amassed nearly four million views in two years.
Winslow has also found success in the music world by teaming up with Texas-based Wooten brothers to accompany them with some beatboxing sounds. That led him to put together his own album, which he’s currently working on.
Then, of course, Winslow can’t say no to all the comic cons and special events he’s invited to in celebration of all the movies he’s been in. He said the best part about attending events like the one in San Antonio is meeting fans.
“The only reason I’m here is because of everyone who has enjoyed what I’ve done,” he said. “The resurgence has started. I’m back, and I’ve been given a wonderful gift.”
