San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich’s recent “health situation” is more serious than the team may have initially led on, according to ESPN sports reporter Shams Charania.

During Tuesday’s episode of ESPN’s NBA Today TV show, Charania said sources informed him that Popovich’s health issue is a great concern for the team and the 75-year-old coach himself.

“I’m told that it was a health issue, and it was a serious health issue that Popovich dealt with over the weekend,” Charania said. “It was a situation on Saturday night, pregame, that Gregg Popovich needed medical attention in San Antonio.”

It remains unknown what kind of medical episode Popovich suffered before the Spurs’ 113-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Frost Bank Center. However, it appears Spurs assistant coach Mitch Johnson will be in charge in the foreseeable future, according to Charania.

“There is a great level of concern around the situation for the Spurs, for Popovich,” Charania said of the Hall of Fame coach.

Even so, Charania added that Johnson is a more-than-capable heir to the Popovich throne and was even a finalist for the Washington Wizards’ head coaching job last season.

The update on Popovich’s health comes after the Spurs on Monday said he wouldn’t travel with the team to games in Los Angeles and Houston this week due to an undisclosed illness.
