Despite trade rumors, the San Antonio Spurs played it safe during Wednesday’s 2025 NBA Draft, selecting Rutgers guard Dylan Harper and Arizona forward Carter Bryant with the team’s No. 2 and No. 14 picks.
Harper was considered this draft cycle’s other top prospect behind Cooper Flagg, whom the Dallas Mavericks grabbed with the No. 1 pick.
The 6-foot-6 Harper, 19, averaged 19 points, five rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes of play during his rookie season at Rutgers University. The Express-News described his playing style as “Ginobili-esque.”
In a phone call with Spurs star forward Victor Wembanyama shared by the team, Harper said he’s ready to hustle.
“We gonna work for sure, man,” Wembanyama told his new teammate.
Some analysts raised concerns that drafting another guard such as Harper didn’t make sense for the team, which already has an All-Star guard in DeAaron Fox and another powerhouse in the position with 2025 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle.
However, Spurs General Manager Brian Wright shook off those concerns during a post-draft press conference.
“Positions in this day and age don’t matter as much,” Wright told reporters. “We just saw playoffs where the team that won had a 6-foot-5 wing that guarded a center.”
Meanwhile, the Spurs second choice, the 19-year-old Bryant, is a 6-foot-8 California native NBA scouts describe as a three-and-D player with significant upside for further offensive growth. He averaged 6 points, four rebounds and one assist in 19 minutes of play.
The child of a deaf mother and grandparents, Bryant is also active in the hearing-impaired community and is fluent in American sign language.
Harper and Bryant are expected to arrive in the Alamo City this week. Both are expected to participate in NBA Summer League games.
