The Esperanza Peace & Justice Center is hosting its 16th Annual Paseo del Westside this Saturday to celebrate West Side cultura and historic preservation.
The free event, co-hosted by the Westside Preservation Alliance and the Historic Westside Residents’ Association, will take place at Rinconcito de Esperanza, 816 S. Colorado Street, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Together, the sponsoring organizations have fought to preserve such West Side landmarks as La Gloria, Lerma’s Nite Club, Casa Maldonado, the original Univision building, the Hays Street Bridge, Basila Frocks, the Alazan Courts and “the hundreds of casitas that are being demolished or threatened with demolition,” according to details provided Esperanza.
“We continue the struggle to save historic buildings from demolition that’s currently being threatened by those same owners of these structures,” the center said in a statement.
The theme of this year’s Paseo del Westside, “Recordando los Tiempos Pasados,” will honor the history of the area’s neighborhoods along with spaces and cultural memories the organizations fight to preserve. The event also will provide a sneak peek of the Esperanza Center’s new Museo del Westside, soon to make its official debut in the renovated former Ruben’s Icehouse.
The gathering will feature live music by Santiago Jimenez Jr. and Belen Escobedo as well as Mexican children’s games and workshops on crochet and piñata making. Poetry readings, food and refreshments will round out the offerings.
