Revamped Fiesta music event La Semana Alegre is returning May 1-2, and it’s celebrating the completion of Hemisfair’s Civic Park by making festival admission free to the general public, organizers said Thursday.
Now in its second year, the gathering transforms Hemisfair into a celebration of music, food and culture. Its present organizers took the name from a week-long San Antonio music festival that regularly drew crowds of up to 30,000 but ran out of steam in the 1990s. La Semana Alegre 2025 will feature more than 15 bands on two main stages over two nights, showcasing both local and touring acts. Organizers have shared a preliminary schedule online.
The popular Kings Del Wepa and Chicos de Barrio will provide the “cumbia-fueled pachanga,” according to a statement from the promoters. Meanwhile, Austin bands Die Spitz and Temple of Love will bring the rock ‘n’ roll, and two LA-based acts will compliment the bill — soulful Los Yesterdays and legacy rockers Legs Diamond, a regular at the original incarnation of La Semana.
Local faves Girl in a Coma, Garrett T. Capps and the legendary Sonny Ozuna will round out this year’s festival with puro San Anto flair. La Semana Alegre food vendors will provide classic Fiesta fare such as chicken on a stick and gorditas, while revelers will be able to sip on cocktails, beer, aguas frescas and more. A market will offer handmade crafts from local artisans and vendors.
Though the festival is free, VIP access is also available for $40. Tickets are on sale now on the La Semana Alegre website. Free, Thursday, May 1-Friday, May 2, Hemisfair Plaza Way, 600 Hemisfair Plaza Way, lasemanaalegre.com.
