The San Antonio Spurs’ super-fan section, launched in advance of this season’s opening, now has an official name: the Spurs’ Jackals.
Members of the special cheering section helped generate names during the squad’s first practice on Friday. At the end of the day, the Jackals had the most votes, the fan group announced Sunday in a tweet.
“It’s official! The Jackals are here and we’re ready to be LOUD!” the post stated. “The goal is simple: Create a home court advantage like the NBA has never seen before.”
The Jackals are the brainchild of Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who wanted the Silver and Black to have its own fan section similar to those of European Soccer clubs.
The Jackals made their debut during the annual Silver and Black Open Scrimmage on Saturday at the Frost Bank Center. Footage of the fan group captured by Spurs sports commentator Casey Viera showed the group chanting and banging on drums.
Members of the Jackals, which Wembanyama selected after intense tryouts last month, received season tickets in the fan section plus parking passes for $999, so long as they attend at least 75% of the team’s home games.
The Jackals will make their first pre-season appearance tonight as the Spurs take on the Guangzhou Loong Lions in an international scrimmage at the Frost Bank Center. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
Tickets for tonight’s matchup start at $12 on Ticketmaster.
