The Alamo has reopened its Paseo del Alamo, a walkway connecting the historic Spanish Mission with San Antonio’s River Walk, officials with the monument said Monday.

The scenic pathway joins a new welcome center and cannon exhibit in the updated southwest corner of Alamo Plaza.

Covered with native shrubbery and thoughtfully designed landscaping, the redesigned Paseo links two of the state’s top two tourist destinations 45 years after the walkway’s original construction. This revamp is part of a larger $700 million plan to redevelop and restore the Alamo and the surrounding area.

Alamo Trust Inc., the nonprofit responsible for the site’s daily operations, revealed the opening July 2. Trust President and CEO Hope Andrade said the walkway will make it easier for visitors to enjoy San Antonio’s most popular destinations.

“The Alamo and the River Walk are linked not just through tourism but through history,” Andrade said in a statement. “The Paseo’s beautiful restoration will make it easier for guests to walk from the energy of the River Walk to the reverence of the Alamo grounds.”

In Alamo Plaza’s southwest corner, visitors also will find an 18-pounder cannon exhibit located on the spot where an actual cannon is believed to have been used against Santa Ana as the Mexican general laid siege. The display also includes information on defenders of the fort, such as Toribio Losoya, who was born and lived at the Alamo before dying in the 1836 battle.

Meanwhile, the new welcome center, located along the Paseo, will serve as a touchpoint for guests making the journey between the River and the fort. It will also sell tickets and a variety of souvenirs.

The revamp also includes a new elevator that connects the river and street levels and implements a rainwater-harvesting cistern to reduce the Paseo’s reliance on local water.
