The works in this Thursday’s closing reception for “Know Body,” a solo exhibition of new creations by Albert Alvarez at Un Grito Gallery, were produced, as the artist puts it, in a society obsessed with image and status without mindfulness or the wisdom of self-awareness.
This state becomes ubiquitous, but Alvarez argues one can learn to see that none of this fiction actually represents one’s own self. Alvarez’s practice functions around the supposition that this state is reversible if an artist cares more about the quality of their work than the ego-based self.
His personal ideology clearly mingles Eastern and Western philosophy, as does his style, which pays equal tribute to ancient Chinese brush painting and masters of the German Renaissance.
Free, 7-10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, Un Grito Gallery, 1420 S. Alamo St., (210) 992-0585, instagram.com/ungritogallery.
