CineFestival San Antonio, the nation’s longest-running Latinx film festival, is back this week for its 47th incarnation.

Devoted to showcasing Latin American feature films and shorts alike, CineFestival provides a reference point for cultural identity, politically charged storytelling and fiercely independent filmmaking.

The festival opens with a screening of Mexicanamerican (2026), the debut film by industry newcomer Eddie Sánchez. Melding home movies with recent interviews, Sánchez weaves a firsthand tale of one family’s journey — both physically and psychologically — from Mexico to the U.S., the convergence of two cultures and resultant intergenerational acceptance of newborn hybridity.

Other inclusions in this year’s festival focus on music-making and the grassroots activism intrinsic to the Latinx experience.

The event also showcases a large volume of short films made by regional and local filmmakers, which CineFestival Program Director Eugenio del Bosque attributes to a creative ecosystem that supports a burgeoning Latinx filmmaking movement here in the Lone Star State. It’s a movement dedicated to independent voices and cultural authenticity — and born of political necessity.

For information on individual screenings, visit the Guadalupe’s website.

Free, $40 all-access pass, Thursday-Sunday, July 7-12, Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry St., (210) 271-3151, guadalupeculturalarts.org.
