Debuting at Sundance in the experimental “NEXT” category, TheyDream is an autobiographical film that combines mixed media animation and cinéma vérité.
In the feature, which screens for free this Friday in San Antonio, filmmaker William D. Caballero uses familial storytelling to illustrate how art can act as a potent means of catharsis.
After the death of his grandmother and his mother’s subsequent retreat into despair, Caballero invited her to collaborate on a project. The pair recreated family stories through increasingly complex modes of filmmaking: animating handcrafted miniatures, digital rotoscoping and 3D motion-capture included.
Caballero simultaneously captured his mother’s journey through the process — her tearful recreations of conversations with her own mother, her trembling hands placing miniatures in front of the camera and, ultimately, her healing through creative collaboration.
Free, 8-10 p.m. Friday, July 17, Chris Park, 111 Camp St., (210) 227-8400, rubycity.org.
